Creativity, Culture and Credentials: Celebrating the Grassroots Programme

Last term, our Year 11 P-TECH rangatahi from Mangere College completed the six-week CreativeTech Grassroots Programme, delivered in partnership with The Cause Collective and the South
Auckland Creative and Tech Hub.

Designed to introduce students to the world of creative technology through culturally responsive, project-based learning, the programme encouraged students to explore digital storytelling, animation, graphic design, 3D design and emerging technologies while building confidence, creativity and collaboration.

The programme concluded with an inspiring showcase at the end of Term 2, where students proudly presented their projects to whānau, educators and programme partners. Their presentations reflected not only the technical skills they had developed over six weeks, but also their creativity, confidence and willingness to tell their own stories through technology.

This week, students completed the final assessments for 8 NCEA credits, using the work they created throughout the programme as evidence towards their achievement. It is a powerful example of how authentic learning experiences can be integrated with the curriculum, enabling students to gain recognised qualifications while engaging in meaningful, real-world projects.

More importantly, the programme demonstrated what is possible when education providers, community organisations and creative industry professionals work together. By combining cultural identity, creativity and technology with recognised educational outcomes, students experienced learning that was relevant, engaging and connected to future pathways.

The Grassroots Programme reflects P-TECH’s commitment to creating innovative learning opportunities that prepare young people for the future while ensuring they remain connected to who they are and where they come from. Partnerships such as this help broaden students' aspirations, build confidence, and open doors to industries they may never have considered.
